“Well you can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd, you can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd, you can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to. You can’t take a shower in a parakeet cage, you can’t take a shower in a parakeet cage, you can’t take a shower in a parakeet cage, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to. All you gotta do is put your mind to it, knuckle down, buckle down and do it, do it, do it.” (Roger Miller)

That is one of the funniest songs I have ever heard. Have a listen, and you’ll be amused, and somewhat happier than you were before you heard it. I guess the point I’m trying to make here is the power music has over one’s emotions. Music has the amazing ability to make someone happy. If you’re day is a bit of a drag, play some music. Pretty soon, you’ll be singing along to every song on the radio, even the ones you don’t know. Listening to music can brighten up anyone’s day. Just turn on the tunes and a positive attitude and see how your day ends up.
There have been many instances where I have had a somewhat mediocre day, or someone has said something to bring me down, where I have needed a pick me up. I’d be driving along, so I’d put in a CD and pretty soon my mood will have lightened and I’ll be bopping along to the music, oblivious to the past events of the day that made me feel down. Pretty soon I’ll be the crazy person at the stop light singing her heart out into a pop can, laughing all the way home.
Music also has the ability to make events and groups of people happier. I remember just blaring some music with some friends and pretty soon the occasion turns into an all out dance party where we show off our daring dance moves that would make any trained dancer cry, or even an untrained dancer for that matter. Sometimes you just have to take the time to let loose and have a genuinely good time listening to music.
Music can also brighten up any task that is not generally viewed as a happy one. When you’re mopping the floor, crank up those tunes, and pretty soon you’ll be angry because you’re finished and you have no more reason to dance with your mop. Or if you’re doing an extremely bland homework assignment, put on your favourite band and it will be a happier task.
Even the messages in music can make one happier, just because it reveals small truths and situations so that you now know what everyone is going through. They can give empowering messages, stimulate laughter, or just tell you that life is good. They can tell you things that make the bad things better. Here are some examples of songs that will make your day a little happier. Have a listen. See what you think. Be happy.
